Wisdom Teeth Removal West End
Here at Dentists in Annerley located near West End, we believe in trying to save your natural teeth whenever possible. The exception to this rule is wisdom teeth, as keeping them will often cause more harm than good.
Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, can cause a variety of symptoms when they start to erupt from the gum. These uncomfortable symptoms include tenderness and jaw pain, cysts, bad breath, redness and swelling. Wisdom teeth can also cause overcrowding and damage to adjacent teeth.
Come see our trusted dentists who can assess if you need one or more wisdom teeth extracted.
The main reason to remove wisdom teeth include:
- No space for it to erupt
- Impacted
- Causing damage to the adjacent teeth
- Infection or cyst around the wisdom tooth
- Causing pain or pressure
- Causing a gum infection (pericoronitis)
- Early removal due to higher risk of issues while roots are yet to fully form
- Unable to clean adequately
- Orthodontic reasons

Before Your Extraction
Before your surgery, our dentists will take a panoramic image with an OPG x-ray and examine your mouth. The x-ray and exam allows us to determine where the teeth are sitting, which teeth are functional, and which need to be extracted. You may only need a single tooth or up to all four teeth extracted.
In the case that the roots of your wisdom teeth are too close or curved around a nerve, we will require a 3D (CBCT) scan to investigate further.
During The Surgery and Healing
Wisdom teeth extraction is a relatively quick procedure that can be completed in the chair at our office near West End.
Typically, we will use local anaesthetic for the procedure, but we have other sedation options if you have unique circumstances or are nervous. We can use nitrous, IV sedation or general anaesthetic to sedate you during the surgery. We cannot put you under general anaesthetic at the clinic, but it can be done at a local hospital near West End.
Make sure to wear comfortable clothes, and arrange for someone to pick you up.
You can expect healing to take 3-4 days. The level of pain varies with every individual. The dentists will likely prescribe medication to help with pain and recovery.
