Information About Wisdom Teeth

Generally, people are born with four wisdom teeth located behind the molars—but in many cases, people are born with only 1, 2 or no wisdom teeth at all! Sometimes these teeth can be turned on their side or located in the wrong area of the mouth, requiring surgery to remove them.

If you find yourself with wisdom teeth problems in the Woolloongabba area, we are here to help.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Renowned across South Brisbane, Dentists in Annerley bring our expertise in wisdom tooth extraction to the Woolloongabba area for safe, fast procedures.

Wisdom teeth are a common cause of oral health issues that we see in our clinic. In many cases, these pesky wisdom teeth will need to be extracted.

Possible causes for extraction include:

  1. No space for it to erupt
  2. Impacted
  3. Causing damage to the adjacent teeth
  4. Infection or cyst around the wisdom tooth
  5. Causing pain or pressure
  6. Causing a gum infection (pericoronitis)
  7. Early removal due to higher risk of issues while roots are yet to fully form
  8. Unable to clean adequately
  9. Orthodontic reasons

Prior To Extraction

Before your extraction, we will take an OPG x-ray to look at your wisdom teeth. The x-ray will show us where the teeth are sitting in your mouth and if there is any damage or infection present.

If any of your wisdom teeth are sitting too close to the nerve or surrounding structures, we will require a 3D (CBCT scan) to determine the next steps.

On The Day

We offer safe and effective local anaesthetic during your wisdom teeth extraction. You will not feel any pain during the procedure, while under local anaesthetic.

For more complex surgeries, we have additional options, including nitrous sedation, IV and general anaesthetic. General anaesthetic cannot be performed in the clinic, however, we can complete the surgery in a local hospital conveniently located near Woolloongabba.

Following the procedure you will be given post-operative care instructions and possibly prescribed some medication to assist with healing.

Healing usually takes 3-4 days on average.

Medical certificates can be provided after treatment as required.
